You cannot live your life on the terms of your team leader. Yes, he may be her superior but that does not mean she has to base her actions on how he’d react. If he is finding faults with her every time and criticizes her, he has a problem not her. If he is demotivating her, ignore him. She should speak up, if she wants to; if he is mistreating her, inform about this to his superior. Also she should do what is in the best interest of her work, which will benefit her in the long run.
In fact, I believe if you hold your own against the team leader, he will probably respect you and will not put you down. Also if your actions are to the benefit of the company, he will never try to come in your way.
